Overview

This is a study of the emergence of car-production in Australia in the 20th century from the first car produced in Australia - the Holden 48-215 - and beyond. The book concentrates on the participation of two major local producers, Ford and General Motors-Holdens. Both of these firms have played a central role in the development of the automotive industry in Australia. This text considers the cause and effect of Australian governmental policies on the local development of the car industry in the 20th century. Apart from any feelings of national pride, car production came to signal that a country had reached a crucial stage of national deveploment. Besides which, other industries grew up or expanded in order to support the automobile industry. Also the country was becoming worried about its reliance on agriculture as a source of revenue and emnployment. With a downturn in the agricultural economy after an inter-war depression, the idea of an industry which had a capcity to employ labour semmed to be an answer to a problem.
