The lawyer then returned to the library, announcing that all business was finished, and invited Melville, as well as the subordinates, to refresh themselves with cold ablutions till breakfast was ready; after which the party sat down, and full justice was done to cold roast beef, devilled turkey, and curried fowl, by all but Mr. Melville, who had not yet recovered his appetite, and who looked, as he felt, sick at heart, and whose face seemed to have aged ten years since the previous day, wearing a grey-hued ghastly appearance in the early morning light. Immediately after breakfast the bonds and all other documents were collected together, a cab was called, and the lawyer, Mr. Melville, one of the clerks, and the detective officer, entered it, and drove off.
