Overview
Alex Defaux, a researcher in Human Biology, lives on a narrowboat moored on the River Thames in London. A new job awaits her at the University of Bath and she and her boyfriend, Jamie, take her boat Marianne on a cruise over the watershed between the Thames and the Bristol Avon before she begins work in the autumn. Jamie, who is in finance in the City of London and is an officer in the Territorial Army, has been traumatised on a recent tour of duty. They both hope the cruise will bring respite from the stresses that have strained their relationship. Along the way, however, they rescue a young man, Baz, from the canal and Alex offers him a ride to his destination. Jamie, unable to persuade Alex to dump Baz, angrily packs his bags and leaves. Baz, an animal rights activist, views Alex's work as directly opposed to his own convictions: his displeasure spells danger and Alex finds herself crossing more than one watershed in her life.
