Overview
Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853. His first job was working for his uncle in a gallery buying and selling paintings. He was sent to work in Paris and London but soon lost interest in paintings and turned to religion. For a time he taught French at a school in Ramsgate. When he returned to Holland in 1877 he studied theology then trained as a missionary in Belgium. It was in Belgium that he became interested in art again and started doing some drawings himself. He moved to Paris to study painting and after two years there, moved to Arles where he produced many of his most famous works such as Sunflowers or Starry Night. It was also here that at the age of 32 he took his own life.
