Overview

Thomas Otway (1652-1685) was an English dramatist of the Restoration period. In 1675 Thomas Betterton produced Otway's first play, Alcibiades, which was printed in the same year. Early in 1680 the first of Otway's two tragic masterpieces, The Orphan; or, The Unhappy Marriage, was produced at the Dorset Garden. In 1680, he also published The Poets Complaint of his Muse; or, A Satyr against Libells. Amongst his other works are Don Carlos (1676), Titus and Berenice (1677), The Cheats of Scapin (1677), Friendship in Fashion (1678), The Soldier's Fortune (1681), Venice Preserved: A Tragedy in Five Acts (1681) and The Atheist (1684).
