Overview

As civilization expands, it encroaches on tribal ways of life and the customs of indigenous peoples begin to change. To celebrate these fast-disappearing traditions, nature photographer Art Wolfe has travelled around the world observing and documenting people and places in this photographic collection. He presents 35 diverse groups - among them, the Bumi of Ethiopia, who scar their torsos with raised geometric designs; the Masai warriors of Kenya, with their towering ostrich plume head-dresses; the Lisu women of northern Thailand, whose indigo turbans are laden with colourful tassels and pounded with silver; and the Kayapo of the Amazon Basin, who paint themselves with tropical fruit dyes and wear flamboyant head-dresses of parrot feathers.
