Overview

A little girl and her mother board the train in town and set off on a journey through the countryside. As they travel, the girl looks out of the train window, asking What shall I see? What shall I see?. Then, when she's named what she sees, she says, That's what I see, that's what I see. This double refrain continues throughout the book, as she sees sheep and cows, a mare and her foal, a shiny red tractor, a ticket collector, her own face in the glass, a gaggle of geese, and a giant balloon. Meanwhile, the train climbs a hill, passes a farm, goes through a tunnel until, eventually, it slows down and comes into a seaside town with a market square and a lighthouse, arriving finally at the station. And who is there waiting? Grandma
