Overview

Tom Grogan is a stevedore, and when he suddenly dies, his wife, Mary, hides the knowledge of her husband's death and takes over the operation of his business (and becomes the "Tom" of the story). She is a tough little cookie, and it's wonderful to see the way she fights the politicians and unions to keep her husband's business afloat (some of the tactics used against her are pretty nasty, including blackmail and attempted murder). But she's a good-natured soul and a most appealing character in the love she harbors for her dead husband, and the care and attention she shows her children. The ending, where Mary wins the legal right to use her husband's name for running the business, is well done. A very entertaining read, great for the summer hammock or just whiling away a couple of hours.
