Overview

On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down one of its most important opinions-the case of Brown v. Board of Education. Thurgood Marshall argued this case that shaped American civil rights policy for the next half-century, clarifying the idea that "separate-but-equal" facilities for blacks and whites would no longer be tolerated. Marshall became an ardent advocate for civil rights as both an attorney and judge helped create new legal protections for all Americans. Later, he became the first African American to serve on the United States Supreme Court. His legacy is greater opportunities in America's classrooms, courtrooms, and corporate boardrooms, regardless of race. Book jacket.
