For is it not clearer than the day, that we feel within ourselves indelible characters of excellence ? And is it not equally clear, that we experience every moment the effects of our present lamentable condition? What, therefore, does this chaos, this monstrous confusion proclaim, but the reality of these two states, and that with a voice so powerful, that it cannot be resisted ? It is by no means incredible, that God thould unite himself to vs. That which renders men so unwilling to believe themselves capable of union with God, is but the sense of their own degradation. Yet, if they be sincere, let themfollow it out as I have done, and they will confess that our degradation has the effect of preventing our discovering, by our own strength, whether his mercy cannot render us capable of this union. For I would gladly be informed, whence this creature, who acknowledges himself so weak, obtains the right to measure and limit the divine mercy, as his own fancy suggests. Man understands so little, the nature of God, that he understands not himself: and yet, troubled by the contemplation of his own condition, he boldly pronounces, that it is beyond the power of God to qualify him for this connexion. But I will ask him what God requires at his hands, but that he should know and love him; and, since he finds himself naturally capable of knowing, and of loving, upon what ground he suspects that God cannot exhibit himself as the object of his knowledge and love ? For he knows, at any rate, that he exists...
