Professor Jackson's previous book Reconstructing the GATT System (Chatham House Papers, 1990) played an influential role in stimulating debate on the overhaul of the constitution and institutional structures of the GATT. That debate gave rise to the World Trade Organisation. This organisation is now faced with new challenges in the form of greatly increased membership, notably from former communist countries, and a raft of potential other issues. In this new study, Professor Jackson discusses the strengths and limitations of the WTO and how it will need to adapt to meet new demands.
