By a pleasing coincidence this translation of the Corn/media has reached its completion during the year which has witnessed in Florence the Festival held in honour of its Author, on the six-hundredth anniversary of his birthday. Another coincidence, which almost seems too striking to be real, is, that the preparation for the Dante Festival caused the discovery of his bones On each of the events in this triplicity a few words may not be deemed superfluous in a preface to our version of Paradiso. The original monument, erected for the reception of Dante's remains, by his friend and patron, Guido da Polenta, had gone to decay: ? Quandoquidem data sunt ipsis quoque fata sepulcri. Juvenal, Sat. x. 146. In 1483 it was repaired and beautified by Bernardo Bembo, Podesta of Ravenna for the Republic of Venice, and father of Cardinal Bembo. After the bones of Dante had slept in this receptacle three centuries and a half, they narrowly escaped a treatment similar to that which the bones of Wiclif had undergone. For in 1677 Cardinal Beltramo del Pogetto ordered them, being the bones of an excommunicated heretic, to be taken from their coffin and burnt. How they escaped was a secret whichhas only been recently explained. The Archbishop, less bigoted than the Cardinal, and a sincere admirer of the poet, caused the remains of Dante to be secretly removed from their tomb and concealed in another part of the church. When the Archbishop died they were not restored to their original situation, and in a few years the place of their concealment was forgotten. In the year 1692 Dante's monument was renewed at the public expense, and in 1780 was replaced by the present structure, at the expense of Cardinal Gonzaga of Mantua, the legate of that period.
