George Meredith was a 19th English poet and author. Meredith was a lawyer but shortly abandoned this career for journalism and poetry. Tragic Comedians was published in 1892. Tragic Comedians is the story of the episodes that led to the death of the social democrat Ferdinand Lassalle. He was a 19th century German-Jewish jurist and socialist political activist. Lassalle took part in the revolutions of 1848-49; as a result he underwent a year's imprisonment in 1849 for resistance to the authorities of Dusseldorf and was banned from living in Berlin. Although Lassalle was a member of the Communist League, his politics were strongly opposed by Marx and Engels. When Lassalle wanted to marry Helene's father opposed tot marriage. Events led eventually to a duel where he was mortally wounded.
