I had heaped his plate with the simple roast meat and vegetables he delighted in; I had prepared him some choice sticks of celery with his cheese; and, finally, I had peeled for him his regulation half dozen of walnuts, which he washed down with nearly a gallon of pure cold water, and during the whole of these ministerings I had not troubled the dearworn-out man with a single question or observation of my own.
