The Shuttle is a glimpse into the lives of two women. The strength and vitality of an American woman helps the stagnant Aristocracy of the English upper class. Frances Hodgson Burnett, (1849 - 1924) was an English?American playwright and author. She is best known for her children's stories, The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, and Little Lord Fauntleroy. After her father's death in 1854 her family lived in poverty in the Victorian slums of Manchester. After moving to Tennessee her mother died in 1867 which made Frances the sole support of the younger children. It was at this point that she began to write. The Shuttle was published in 1906. Rosalie is the daughter of a rich American who married into an English family. She learns that the family is impoverished. Years into her disastrous marriage she is unable to contact her family. Roalie's sister Bettina comes to England. Bettina is a smart industrious American woman who uses her money and energy to revitalize the English society. Burnett uses this novel to empathize the need for the British to adopt the mentality of the American industrialized society.
