Overview
While doing post-doctoral work in Paris, Robert West comes across a statement by the famous French mathematician Fermat claiming he could mathematically prove that there is no God. When West receives a fellowship from the Institute for Advanced Concepts for his brilliant work on cryptanalysis, he decides to pursue this mathematical proof. West goes to Rome and the Vatican library to peruse Fermat's last journal, which the Vatican has kept carefully hidden away, knowing full well Fermat's claim. Because of his work in cryptography, the NSA has bugged West's home and office, and when it discovers that he is trying to disprove the existence of God, an NSA agent is given the task of surveilling West and, if necessary, to take "necessary measures" to prevent him from succeeding. Someone in the Vatican also has the same goal.
