These ancient relationships between humans and fire broke down when people began to burn fossil biomass--lithic landscapes--and humanity's firepower became unbounded. Fire-catalyzed climate change globalized the impacts into a new geologic epoch. The Pleistocene yielded to the Pyrocene.
