Overview

Niccolò Machiavelli wrote The Prince in the first half of the sixteenth century as a guide for the rulers of his time. It began to be circulated closely around 1513 but was not published until 1532. Today, it is recognized as a political essay that supports the view that the ends justify the means. Machiavelli makes the point that it is best if objectives are beneficial to society at large, but regardless, whatever violence needs to be done to achieve the goal should be done as a one-time event rather than strung out over a period of time. His Discourses on Livy, in which he defends the concept of a republic, was written a few years later and published in 1531.
