Overview
I have traveled to Central America several times. The last time I traveled there was on a trip to Nicaragua. At the time I worked for a major U.S. Cigar Distributor. The trip was to learn about how hand-rolled cigars were made. While I was there I took hundreds of photos, and made detailed notes of the process, from the greenhouses to the cigar factories. When I returned to the States, I compiled the pictures and information into a book "From Seeds to Cigars." It's available online. But what was more important about the trip, my meeting with a tobacco grower named Carlos Baez. He was the head tobacco grower at one of the Farms I visited. He was a very interesting man and had in depth knowledge of the region, the plant life and the history of the Nicarao and Mayan natives. I wanted to meet with him to learn more about not just the cigar industry, but about what he knew of the area's original natives and their history. Several days later we met at a small cafe in Esteli, Nicaragua. We talked about how he became employed in the cigar business. He originally came to the area to study medicinal plants, specifically about plants that were used by the Central American natives. Carlos also told me of the time he took a trip to Belize, and met with Alvarez Gutierrez, a tour guide who had extensive knowledge of botanicals, Mayan ruins, and many points of interest throughout Central America. Alvarez took him to a place were he showed him many medicinal plants. He told him that he brought very few people to this spot, and that it was sacred. Alvarez told him about these three Americans that he had brought to the same spot a couple of years earlier. They had an interest in only one specific plant "the Pixan tree" with the Golden Crystals, and he pointed it out to Carlos.
