Purposes other than literary and artistic ones motivated the theatre of the late sixteenth century, especially in England. Freeing itself from dependence upon performances at Court or in the houses of aristocratic patrons, the theatre was becoming an entertainment business, seeking to please the tastes of a wide audience.
