This point will be further touched upon in a future part of this Preface (pages xxxviii, xl). Since the death of the late MARQUIS OF LANSDOWN, which happened in May 1805, an opinion has been started that the Letters of Junius were written by his lordship. The grounds upon which this conjecture is founded, are entirely unknown to me; but it is very improbable that this nobleman, who had at the time so many weighty concerns as well as private avocations to engage his attention, should have either opportunity or desire for this sort of lucubration. He would never have corresponded with Mr. Wilkes or Mr. Home, nor have requested Mr. Wilkes to correct his Dedication; and his mind was at all times superior to an amusement of this kind- The above-mentioned are the principal characters to whom the Letters of Junius have been ascribed; and I presume that, for the reasons assigned, not one of the conjectures will seem to be well founded. The question thus naturally recurs, Who then is the author? I too have long been not without my suspicion; and in my judgment this suspicion, as far as the evidence of circumstances can make it so, is satisfactorily proved to be correct. I believe the author to have been HUQH BOYD, Esq. son of Alexander Macaulay, esq. of Glenville in the county of Antrim, in Ireland.
