Excerpt from book: After thinking about my command, almost as long as Patsey had about my explanation, Slow Jim felt about among the ties until he had a sure footing, then started the trip of cars. Between Jim's long ears I could see in the distance in front the naked flame of Patsey's light rising about six inches above his head. It cast a circle of yellow light upon the dull black ceiling about three feet above him, and threw a sheet of light on the blackness in front of him. Upon this splendid field of light, Patsey's frail body and sparrow legs silhouetted themselves. He had a dilapidated walk, and with each step seemed to be about to break off at the pockets. Before Slow Jim reached the door he was so close to Patsey I had to stop him in order to let the door-tender get ahead. When Patsey finally reached the door, which was built of two thicknesses of hemlock boards, extending from wall to wall, it required all his strength to pull it open; partly because it was so heavy, and partly because the pressure of the air was so strong against this air-tight door. If Patsey was going to be as slow shutting the door as he was opening it, I feared that any day a body of gas might accumulate in at the face large enough to cause a serious explosion. After the cars passed through I showed Patsey that all he had to do was to let go his hold on the door, and the current of air would shut it and hold it shut, unless a chunk of coal had fallen down between the door and the frame. I also impressed upon him again that he must make sure that nothing prevented the door from shutting airtight. When I returned from the face with the first trip of loaded cars, Patsey opened the door and I passed through and on to the box where I stopped Slow Jim, while I ate a little lunch.
