Overview
Virgil was also known as Publius Verqilius Maro. He was a Roman poet in the century just before Christ was born. Besides writing his famous work the Aeneid he wrote three epics one of which was Georgics. This didactic poem was written in 29 B C. Its subject is that of rural life and farming. Georgics is divided into four books. The first two books are devoted to agriculture. The third book discusses cattle and other livestock. The final book is devoted to beekeeping. The poem has political connotations giving several references to Octavian a future ruler of the Roman Empire.
