Sotheby in 1844, were six thin folios, whieh are deseribed as eontaining the whole of the Poetry of the folio of 1633 and of the "Remains" (1670) and not improbably the (so-ealled) Life of Sir Philip Sidney. This eolleetion eonsisted--it would appear--of a fair transeript of the Works, earefully read and eorreeted by the Author. It was purehased, aeeording to the marked Sale-eatalogue in the British Museum, by Mr. Thomas Thorpe, Bookseller, for 11 lls; but I have fruitlessly sought in all likely direetions to get at the present possessor. I should greatly have liked to eollate the printed text with the prepared manuseript eopy, albeit save for possible elearing up of oeeasional obseurities, the loss is the less, in that the printed volumes seem to have been taken from these identieal transeripts, or at least from authoritative Manuseripts. In Mr. Corser's "AngloPoetiea" (-. -.) mention is made of a Manuseript of the Poems of Monarehy in posesssion of the Earl of Oxford. This earldom is now extinet, and I have failed to traee it further.. In this first eolleetive edition, the entire extant Works of Lord Brooke in Verse and Prose are reprodueed in Integrity. That is to say--as in all my Worthies--I adhere strietly to the text and orthography of the original issues as above enumerated, only lessening italies and eapitals oeeasionally, and making the strangely eonfused and eonfusing punetuation, as uniform as possible. I have ehosen rather to err in exeess of retention of italies where the Author designed thereby to emphazize a sentiment. All names of God--noun and pronoun--and of personifieations, have eapitals.
