The firft idea and principal object of Mrs. P, was to inftill into the mind of her niece, the ambition to become and woman of fafhion. The perfection of fuch a character, as it was conceived in the mind of the old lady, was the model on which Leonora was to be formed. Her vivacity was, by no means, unfuitable to her years; but her aunt was very attentive to check the flow of it, by affuring her that fhe would be too boifterous for a woman of fafhion. The good lady's arguments in favour, or to the difadvantage of any part of Leonora's conduct, all ended in defcri- bing its approach to, or deviation from, her favourite character. The accomplim- ments rnents of her fex, which the carelefs levity of youth ufed Ibmetimes to neglect, were not reprefented to her as neceflary to the ornament or comfort of her life, but urged merely as the efiential accompaniments of the fafhionable character; as no one couldfigure, with propriety, in fafhiona- ble circles, or even gain a welcome admif- fion into them, who did not poflefs the paflport of elegant education. Mrs. P appeared to confider religion as a matter of no confequence whatever in forming the mind of her young relation. The fafhionable manner of walking up the aide of a church, and exerci- fing the ceremonies of a pew, were all fhe taught her concerning her duty to the Creator.
