Of his antecedents little was known, except that he came from Worcestershire, and had been a ship's doctor. His address was so pleasing that he soon became a general favourite, and flourished accordingly. He married a respectable widow of the place, who had money, and had to all appearance a prosperous and honourable professional career before him. But Morrell's social gifts were not wholly to his advantage. He was the best of good company, and this recommended him to the society of the gentry of the neighbourhood. Whilst he enjoyed their hospitalities his practice was neglected, and he became hopelessly involved in money difficulties. Under these circumstances he made up his mind to take French leave of all his troubles and responsibilities and start on a new career?to begin life as a professional bigamist He had a man-servant as little troubled with scruples as himself, who agreed to share his adventures, and who proved a worthy Sancho for such a Don Quixote. Their first exploit was achieved at Brailes, a Warwickshire village not many miles from Banbury, but on the particulars of it we need not enter. The wife married, and deserted in a few days, was merely the daughter of a well-to-do country artificer; and the affair had no special influence on his future career, except as furnishing funds to enable him to appear shortly afterwards at Ludlow in all the splendour proper to a fine gentleman of the period.
