In the Life of Gregory the Great, it has been related how that good Pope, full of missionary zeal, dispatched Augustine and his companions to the shores of Britain to convert the Saxons. There can be no clearer proof of the astonishing success of the work of these Christian teachers than the life of him who has been ever distinguished in Church history as the Venerable Bede. Not much more than seventy years after the landing of the Roman missionaries on the savage, turbulent, and heathen island, a native Saxon is found devoting a long and peaceful life to religious and literary study, composing large volumes of theology, explanations of the Scriptures, Church history and poetry, and taking a leading place in the estimation of his contemporaries as one of the chief, if not the chief, religious writer of his day. The life and work of Bede are indeed wonderful, and all that we know of him gives us a veryhigh idea of his pure and simple Christian character. Unfortunately, however, the amount of our knowledge is but small as far as regards any actions of Bede's life. His life was passed in his monastery in a continual course of study. He took no part in the ecclesiastical controversies and quarrels of the time.
