Overview
Paul Carus was a German-American author, editor, a student of comparative religion, and former professor of philosophy. Carus was born in Germany and after college he served in the army and then taught school. He was raised in an orthodox Protestant home and in later years moved away from these beliefs. He left Germany because of his liberal views and moved to the United States. The Buddha is a drama in five acts and four Interludes. Carus was a key figure in the introduction of Buddhism to the West. His book The Gospel of Buddha is an excellent reference book.
