Overview
Sir Walter Scott (1771 1832) was a popular Scottish historical novelist and poet. Scott was the first English language author to have international popularity during his lifetime. His novels remain popular today. His most famous works include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of The Lake, Waverely, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. The Black Dwarf is based on a real man known to Scott. Sir Edward Mauley becomes involved in a quarrel with a friend. He is jailed for his actions and then is betrayed by the person he was supporting. When he is freed he goes of Mucklestane Moor where the locals call him a servant of the Devil based on his extraordinary strength, knowledge of medicine, and ready wealth.
