He pulled her by the sleeve, and they moved off together, looking around continually; till they came to the slope going down into a deep channel, almost a ravine, along the bottom of which the stream dragged its way lazily, grown over with sedge and full of mossy hillocks. At the bottom of the ravine they were hidden completely from the view of the whole field occupied by the Zaporojian army. At any rate when Andri looked back he saw that the slope rose as an abrupt wall, higher than a man. On its summit could be seen a few blades of field grass; and above them, in the heavens, was the moon in the form of a half inverted sickle of bright ruddy gold.
