Overview

Hazlitt (1778-1830) was an English writer, drama and literary critic, painter, social commentator and philosopher who is now considered one of the greatest critics and essayists in the history of the English language. He is also acknowledged as the finest art critic of his age, and was a friend to many of the great literary figures of the early 19th century including Charles and Mary Lamb, Coleridge, Wordsworth and Keats. This collection of essays was originally published in two separate volumes, the first appearing in April 1821 and the second in June 1822. The essays deal with such topics as art, literature and philosophy and are considered by many to be Hazlitt's finest work.
