O whisper at eventide, wind of the west, When the shadowy valleys are lying at rest, When through the dim lanes as the wayfarers pass, They hear the long sweep of the scythe in the grass; When a quaint rustic carol the haymaker weaves, And the glowworm shines green in the midst of green leaves. O breathe, merry wind, and my sail shall fly free, Where beautiful Tamar glides down to the sea; At that sweetest of hours when the turmoil of day Into night's happy silence is melting away, And the maiden, while heavy leaves rustle above, Drinks perilous draughts of the vintage of love. Ay, quench thy deep thirst, ere the moment has flown; But once in the lifetime of mortals 'tis known; But once?and old Care, an inflexible churl, Will darken the days of the prettiest girl: Yet deep in thy breast shall the memory abide Of that one happy hour in the sweet summertide. AN EASTER IDYL. Easter came late in April. Almost May Threw wreaths of beauty upon lawn and wold, Freshened with rich green leaves the antique woods, And cast the water-lily on the stream, Weeds on the sea shore, blossom where the boughs Of gnarled trees grew widely. Lazily Crept the blue ripple to the cliffs, and broke In low sweet music. All was beautiful With a sad beauty: and the Oreads sang? Ah me ah me the world is waxing old. II. - O could the world grow young again, and we Trace up our footsteps to the orient dawn Of lands and nations, rolling back the tide Of time through all that long Platonic year Th' old fable tells of Could we drink again At Eden's wells, cool, icy cool and dark, In glades untrodden save by Eve's fair foot, Unsandalled, lighter than the fawn's.
