This is the question which I set before myself in this short paper. A great part of the Old Testament consists of history, chronology, genealogies. It contains a more or less complete system of law based upon primitive legal concepts?upon the principle of retaliation, and on the allowance of the vendetta in the place of public justice: a large part of it is occupied with the wearisome details of an exploded ritual, and with directions for sacrificial rites which interest us rather as antiquaries than as Christians. It contains a passionate love poem; it comprises pieces of ancient story on subjects of which we think? Pih fe tacer che ragionare, onesto. The Psalms are full of the spirit of revenge, and breathe imprecations of the most terrible kind on the enemies of the writers; the prophets are crowded with obscure allusions, and are full of the personalities and the politics of the petty Hebrew kingdoms. It may be said that the history of these kingdoms as disclosed in the Old Testament is full of instruction, as an account of the manner in which there was preserved through adversity, and through sin and consequent decline, a nation who were the custodians of the great doctrine of Monotheism, -?that in the pages of the Old Testament we can see God in History. I should not for a moment deny such a proposition. It is just as true as that the history of England may clearly show to the devout mind the way in which our nation, with all its faults, has been the appointed instrument under God of keeping alive the sacred flame of freedom.
