Overview
C. S. Lewis was an Irish author who published over 40 books. His best known were The Screwtape Letters and his children's series The Chronicles of Narnia. From 1925 to 1954 he was a fellow and tutor of Magdalen College, Oxford, and from 1954 to 1963 he was professor of Medieval and Renaissance English at the University of Cambridge. When Lewis returned from World War One in 1919 he wrote this collection of verse. His poetry gives the reader an in depth look into the psyche of a man struggling with the trauma of war and his ambiguous feelings about his personal faith. The poems run the gambit of emotion from anguish and anger to melancholy. In many ways Lewis's own journey form atheism to Christianity is mirrored in these poems.
