When Soun Tetoken undergoes his Wyakin (the ritual meditation period prior to becoming a man), a dramatic event occurs that changes his life and results in the arrival of a coyote pup who shares his adventures from that day on. The growing tension between the Nez Perce and the white man is skillfully recounted. So is the freedom flight down the Bitterroot Valley and the Big Hole Battle. The surrender of Chief Joseph and his unforgettable words, "From where the sun now stands I shall fight no more forever" is dramatically recorded. Ken Tomasma walked through the battlegrounds and spent hours with Vernon Walters, old Chief Joseph's great-great-grandson, to authenticate the details of this story. No wonder the daily life of the Nez Perce and their rich cultural heritage are so realistically depicted.
