Jack Faber is a young hotshot pitcher from Louisiana and a star in the College Baseball League, the famed summer league on Cape Marlin (a stand-in for Cape Cod) off the coast of New England. There the best young ballplayers in the United States have spent their summers for more than 50 years, and reputations are won and lost--for nine weeks in the high summer, it is besieged by Major League scouts.

Faber's first summer is a terrific one, with perhaps the best pitching performances anyone has ever seen. He returns home a hero. But things begin to unravel when Faber mysteriously loses the abilitiy to throw a pitch. Shamed, Faber hangs up his cleats and searches for answers on the magical fields of Cape Marlin.. But the Seawolves want him back, and Jack returns to beautiful Cape Marlin--not only to find his pitching ability but himself.
