SRM. r g HE happy influence of religion. JL upon human life, in the time of adverfity, has been confidered in the preceding difcourfe. Congern, ing this the fen- timents of men are more generally agreed, than with refpect to fome other prerogatives which religion claims. They very readily affign to it the office of a Comforter. But as long as their ftate i? profperous, they are apt to account it an unneceflary gueft, gueft, perhaps an unwelcome intruder. S E R M. Let us not be thus unjuft to religion, nor confine its importance to one period only in the life of man, It was never intended to be merely the nurfe of ficknefs, and the ftaff of old age. I purpofe npxv to fhow you, That it is no lefs eflential to the en? joyment of pr-ofperity, than to the comfort of adverfity: That profperity is profperous, if we may be allowed the expreffion, to a good man only; and that to every other perfon, it will prove, notwithftanding its fair appearance, a barren and joy lefs ftate.
