Our eyes are fo much accuftomed to it, that it hardly makes any impreffion. Throughout every feafon of the year, and during the courfe of almoft every day, the funerals which pafs along the ftreets fhow us man going to his long home. Were death a rare and uncommon object; were it only once in the courfe of a man's life, that he beheld one of his fellow-creatures carried to the grave, a folemn aweawe would fill him; he would flop fhort in S E RM. the midft of his pleafures; he would even i?iAf be chilled with fecret horror. Such impref- fions, however, would prove unfuitable to the nature of our prefent ftate. When they . became fo ftrong as to render men unfit for the ordinary bufinefs of life, they would in a great meafure defeat the intention of our being placed in this world. It is better ordered by the wifdom of Providence, that they fhould be weakened by the frequency of their recurrence; and fo tempered by the mixture of other pafilons, as to allow us to go on freely in acting our parts on earth. Yet, familiar as death is now become, it is undoubtedly fit, that by an event of fo important a nature, fome impreffion mould be made upon our minds. It ought not to pafsover, as one of thofe common incidants which are beheld without concern, and awaken no reflection.
