Overview

In January 1841, as snow fell hard in the Sierra Nevada, Samson and his sister were born in a cosy canyon den. Samson weighed a pound and a half and measured just ten inches at birth. Samson's first encounter with man did not happen until a year and a half later, at 175 pounds, he had grown into a fully-fledged yearling bear. By the time he turned six Samson weighed over 1000 pounds and was the biggest bear around. He took a mate, and seven moths later, she gave birth to their cubs in her winter den. But an especially determined hunter managed to trap Samson, and he was dragged to town for one of the notorious bear-and bull fights popular at the time. It was to be the fight of his life.
