Overview

The story of a prominent American inventor.Robert Fulton was a man who knew an opportunity when he saw one. Although he came from a poor family, he was a shrewd businessman who made the most of his connections. After meeting Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia, Fulton received a letter of introduction from him that gave him entrance into some very fashionable and aristocratic circles in Europe, where Fulton went to study art. He soon changed his focus to engineering and began work on improving several naval designs. But when his schemes failed, he returned to America with a new plan to build a steamship. Although his designs weren't completely original, Robert Fulton perfected the work of previous inventors and introduced turn-of-the-century Americans to the first modern, working steamship.
