The setting is the north of England and Scotland in the time before, during, and after the first Jacobite uprising of 1715. Rob Roy is Robert MacGregor, whose legend in Scotland is similar to that of Robin Hood in England: a fierce reputation as an outlaw matched only by his kindness and compassion toward the poor and oppressed.
