His handsome face and manly form appeared unequalled in the eyes of his wife and his father, and certainly if equalled they could not be surpassed; but it was not his personal advantages alone which insured him the love and affection that beamed in the countenance of the venerable Count, sand shone in the glistening eyes of Edwine as they gazed after him descending with stately pace the steep declivity. No, it was the obedient and respectful son, the adoring husband, the fond father, whose retreating form they watched, until it was lost in the distance, and whose absence would make every hour appear to lag, now his beaming eye and cheerful tones were no longer there to give their wonted zest to their small family party. After a few days the Count resumed his usual tranquil demeanour, while Edwine endeavoured to soothe her mind with the sweet idea of Hila- rion's return, and the improvement he would behold in their infant darling. In the meantime Hilarion pursued his way, but he felt so little disposed to join the Kingly revels that ere he reached Anduze he felt strongly tempted to return and remain in his happy domestic circle; then again, he reflected that it would be more than discourteous towards the good King, if neither his father nor himself accepted the distinguished invitation with which he had honoured them; and mentally resolving that his stay should be short, he spurred onward, as if desirous of putting distance between himself and the magnet from which he tore himself so reluctantly away.
