Overview

By using Patterns, students of any age or ability level will be able to name, recognize, and extend simple repeating, growing, and decreasing patterns. A variety of activities are provided to meet the needs of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners: coloring pictures, drawing their own patterns, verbalizing concepts, movement exercises, arranging pattern blocks, building models, and cut-and-paste activities. Multiple representations will help students recognize familiar patterns in different situations.
Extension activities are provided for more hands-on learning in the classroom. Students will see repeating patterns demonstrated using colors, sizes, motions, sounds, and pictures and growing and decreasing patterns illustrated with stories, pictures, and models. Pattern blocks are used throughout the book to connect these concepts to geometry. Patterns gives students a solid conceptual base that will help ease later transitions to more advanced algebraic concepts.
