L. campus. Champagne, the plateau in France, is another form of the same word. Cf. Deut. xi. 30, " The Canaanites, which dwell in the champaign over against Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh." held his way. Perhaps an echo of Vergil's "tenebat certus iter" (Aeneid, v. i). 3. Hours, a personification common in the classics, the Hours being the goddesses, first of the Seasons--the course of which was described as the dance (cf. 'circling') of the Horae--then later of the separate divisions of the day. The idea of the 'Hours' having charge of the gates of heaven is Homeric. Cf. Iliad, viii. 393-5: "Self-moving groaned upon their hinges the gates of heaven whereof the Hours are warders, to whom is committed great Heaven and Olympus, whether to throw open the thick cloud or set it to ." The epithet 'circling' is used with reference to he ' perpetual round' of alternate light and darkness (l. 6). with rosy hand, a reminiscence of the Homeric 'rosyfingered', a constant epithet of 'Dawn' po$o5d.Kruos ijtis. Cf. "Hail, smiling Morn, whose rosy fingers ope the gates of day ." 5. mount of God, the 'sacred hill' (l. 26) whereon God sits throned inaccessible. fast, close. 7. dislodge, intransitive, 'quit their resting-place '. The idea is borrowed from Hesiod, Theogony, 748, &c., a work that Milton very much admired. 8. Grateful vicissitude, pleasing change. 10.
