1908. Brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Beecher was a theologically liberal American Congregationalist clergyman and reformer widely famous as the pastor of Plymouth church of Brooklyn. His last years were troubled by a highly publicized trial in which charges of adultery were brought against him. The jury could not agree and an ecclesiastical council acquitted him.
