Overview
March 2004 is 200-year anniversay of the so-called Penydarren engine, designed by the great Cornish engineer Richard Trevithick, hauling a ten-ton load over nine and a half miles of track in South Wales, making it the world's first railway locomotive. Marked by celebrations including a re-enactment using a replica engine the event is also commemorated by a ten-part TV series on the Discovery Channel, looking at two centuries of railway history and devised by Anthony Burton. replicas of others, together with great feats of railway engineering and architecture, and illustrations of landmark events in railway history, traces the early development of the railways and their subsequent spread over five continents in the course of the 19th century. It then goes on to describe the quest for greater speed and luxury in the first half of the 20th century and the subsequent demise of steam in favour of electric and diesel power, culminating in today's high-speed trains such as the TGV and the 2003 mag-lev train in Shanghai. India, China and Africa to see and photograph historic engines, such as the Union Pacific's gigantic 4-8-4 and the monumental steam locomotives still used on the Chinese-Mongolian border, and some of the world's most spectacular lines like the Durango and Silverton in Colorado. There are also chapters on the great 19th-century railway contractors, like Thomas Brassey, specialist freight trains for mining and logging, narrow-gauge lines, the lives of working railwaymen, the great luxury trains such as the Orient Express, the epic feats of engineering which made possible the building of America's transcontinental system or the Alpine railways of Switzerland, and a look at modern railways and their future prospects.
