Overview

A public health official arrives at the Teikoku Bank in Tokyo saying there has been an outbreak of dysentery and he has been assigned by Occupation authorities to treat all who might have been exposed. The official distributes medicine and instructs the staff how to drink it. Within minutes, ten employees are dead and the official has fled, but the horrific crime is merely the catalyst for this blistering novel. The narrative s staggering power and pathos comes from the twelve different voices telling the story. Each plays a part in a tangle of witting or unwitting complicity in blurring the line between truth and lies.
