Paternal arms are always hereditary, that i s to say, they are transmitted, together with his blood, to all a father's legitimate children, differenced as to the male, but plain with regard to the female issue. The latter does not, however, inherit the crest and motto, which are not heritable, in any case, by females. An illegitimate child has no arms until such are expressly granted to him by the Earl Marshal. But it is usual for such persons to assume the arms of their father, with a bendlet sinister surtout, to indicate their illegitimacy. In many cases of this kind the bendlet sinister has been deemed too intelligible, and a bordure substituted, which is less likely to be understood. The arms of a father belong naturally to his son, even although that son may be wholly ignorant of his right, and also to his descendants in the male line for ever. It is always lawful, moreover, for a gentleman to use the ensigns of an ancestor in the male line, and, if they have lain dormant, to re-assume them without a new grant from the Heralds. But if bis descent from such an ancestor rest only upon tradition, or on some other equally dubious foundation, it is necessary for him to obtain the authority of the College of Arms to render the usage of his arms anything better than an usurpation. In the same manner, though it is always lawful to restore a name to an ancient form, and to free it from corruption, either of orthography or pronunciation, it is not so to make an absolute transformation of it by adding or taking away without sufficient authority, or to assume another in its stead, or attached to it, without the Royal Sign Manual.
