Overview

Hard science fiction; an asteroid is altered from its orbit by a passing interstellar body and becomes a dangerous asteroid that will impact the Earth in nine years. With international cooperation, the means of deflection is designed, built, launched and landed on the asteroid. Unfortunately, a clandestine cell hacks into the control system to deflect the asteroid to a target of their choice; something astrophysicist Carl Sagan had warned about. The story is fiction, but the scientific backdrop is non-fiction: how asteroid trajectories are determined, how trajectories are computed to predict impact locations.
