Overview

For Pat Terrell, the thrill of knocking away a two-point conversion pass in Notre Dame's seismic football upset of No. 1 Miami in 1988 still reverberates inside of him, but so does the feeling of being a commercial airline pilot during the 9/11 tragedies and beyond. For Kevin McDougal, it's helping underprivileged kids in South Florida that defines him as much or more than taking the Irish football team to the cusp of a national title in 1993. For Mike McNair, it's about finding a happy ending and still loving your time at Notre Dame, even if his recruiting hype overshadowed his football career. For Reggie Brooks, it's about seeing the Notre Dame spirit in his brother, Tony Brooks, each day that Tony wrestles with a debilitating back condition, years after the two made names for themselves at Notre Dame. In Notre Dame: Where Have You Gone?, author Eric Hansen catches up with a wide array of former Fighting Irish football players, from the All-Americans to the walk-ons to the one-play wonders to the once-tragic figures. Their paths vary from Skip Holtz following his father into college coaching to Gary Godsey taking a crack at acting on the big screen to Coley O'Brien working for NASA to Joey Getherall joining the Los Angeles Police Department. But Notre Dame: Where Have You Gone? captures more than simple "Where Are They Now?" stories. Hansen pens the part of the Notre Dame experience that is woven into their everyday lives-like why former All-America tight end Ken MacAfee's dream of being a dentist evolved into being an oral surgeon who reconstructs faces of children who have been in accidents and essentially helps put their lives back together. Or why after hearing former Secretary of State Colin Powell speak in person, former All-America running back Nick Eddy ditched his lucrative insurance business to go back to school and become a Special Education teacher. Hansen also looks at key moments in the players' careers-how they dealt with coaching changes, with injuries, with broken dreams-as well as what pulled them to Notre Dame in the first place. In Bobby Brown's case, for instance, it was the best path to transcend a life where his father spent much of Brown's childhood in prison, and he felt coach Lou Holtz was the man who could feed his dreams of going to law school when football ended. The dreams are as diverse as the personalities behind them, but it's a common thread that pervades all their lives. They have also come to realize the dark moments at Notre Dame were just as valuable in the context of the real world as were the victories and that the true magic of Notre Dame isn't in the championships and the Heisman Trophies and the cliches out of its rich football lore, it's the enduring spirit. And that's why they yearn to come back and give back. Book jacket.
